WHO?

I was informed today that Harrah, OK (home to my best friend and a town just West of Podunk, OK) is also home to Tim Holt, Dale Robertson and the Waner Brothers (not to be confused with the Warner Brothers of Bugs Bunny fame)....these guys are HUGE...for Harrah at least.

TIM WHO???

Tim Holt. Evidently, he is a "Hollywood Cowboy". YOWZERS! My best friend lives next to Tim Holt BOULEVARD...a road that doesn't fit more than 2 cars and has no curb. Guess Timmy Boy wasn't that good of a cowboy. Of course, she claims it goes into "downtown" Harrah - with all 3 of its stop lights.

I would like to note (before I get angry comments from Oklahomians) that I HAVE been to Harrah and my best friend is the one who pointed this all out to me. So its her fault! But she DOES live in Podunk. Oh wait, Harrah, WEST of Podunk! Where, according to their web site (link above on HARRAH) their main concerns are jobs, events and garbage. :)

You just can't make this stuff up.

Just a note in honor of my baseball-loving grandmother....The Waner brothers, Paul and Lloyd—also known as "Big Poison" and "Little Poison"—played together for fourteen seasons in the same Pittsburgh outfield in the 1920s and 1930s. More than half a century after retiring, they still rank as the best-hitting brothers in major league history with a combined 5,611 hits—517 more than the three Alou brothers, 758 more than the three DiMaggio brothers, and 1,400 more than the five Delahanty brothers. And both Waners are in the Hall of Fame, the only playing brothers so honored.

Who knew?

Rufus

I found out this morning that Rufus, my best friend Nicole's dog, died in his sleep last night. Rufus was 15 years old and got sick very suddenly on Monday... After a struggle at home and at the vet, Rufus went to wait for Nicole at the Rainbow Bridge last night.

My heart is aching not only because of his passing but because of my best friend's loss too. She is in Oklahoma so I can't hug her from so far away, but I am sending her hugs and love and support and know that she and Rufus will one day be reunited. He had a good life with her - she and her husband spoiled Rufus (and their other 2 dogs) so Rufus knew he was loved. It doesn't help their pain now, but he had a good life and now is in a better place where he's not suffering anymore.

Rest in peace Rufus. You will be missed forever.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Hope against hope...

This is an oldie but definitely worth posting here, because its so funny!! I just hope against hope that I never have to give Luna a pill....unless I have plenty of body bags on hand! :)

How To Give A Cat A Pill
1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door on to neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the cat from across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie the front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of filet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15. Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

Club sandwiches...not seals

Its no secret that I strongly oppose the Canadian seal hunt that started at the end of March... Well, today I received wonderful news via email!! The Humane Society has announced the following:
The European Environment Commissioner has announced a plan to ban the trade in all seal products originating from inhumane hunts. This builds upon the historic declaration by the European parliament in 2006. If an EU-wide ban is enacted, the fashion houses serving the main markets for seal skins today -- China and Russia -- would be forced to stop, and millions of baby seals would be saved from cruel slaughter. In the meantime, many nations have either banned seal product trade or announced their intentions to do so. They include: Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Panama, Mexico, and the United States. Just the potential for an EU ban on seal products has saved thousands of seals already. Prices paid for seal skins this year have declined so much that most sealers have chosen to stay home.
YAY!!! That's wonderful news.... In addition, the email they sent also noted that:
The HSUS-led boycott of Canadian seafood in the U.S. has attracted more than 618,000 individuals, 3,500 restaurants, and major grocery chains such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. With more than 80% of Newfoundland's fishing revenue coming from shellfish and less than 3% from the seal hunt, we have tremendous leverage as consumers to end this hunt! Fishermen are fast realizing they stand to lose more from killing seals than they will ever hope to gain.
I can't tell you what wonderful news this is. Of course, it won't help the countless seals who have been horrifically killed this year so far, but maybe it signifies that an end is in sight to this barbaric practice. It shows that if people band together, we really can make a difference in the world!!

If you haven't already, please visit The Humane Society's Save the Seals site and sign the petition to end the seal hunt and to boycott Canadian products until the hunt no longer exists.

The seals need our help!

Its ASPCA Day!!

Today is ASPCA Day! The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a wonderful organization who helps millions of animals get out of bad situations and find loving homes. They've rescued countless numbers of animals and have also made people aware of the horrors of cruelty to helpless animals. Since today is ASPCA Day, you can click the link above and see what you can do to help animals - there are plenty of things that don't necessarily involve money! And be sure to wear orange today in support of ASPCA Day! I know I am!!
